What to Do in Kalamata: The Ultimate 5-Day Itinerary
Kalamata and the wider Messinia region are perhaps the most complete and diverse destination in the Peloponnese. It combines a stunning coastline, endless history, untouched nature and picturesque villages within very short driving distances. If you are wondering what to do in Kalamata in 5 days, the ideal itinerary includes exploring the Old Town, excursions to the beaches of Messinian Mani (Stoupa, Kardamyli), a walk to the historic Castle of Pylos, swimming in the famous Voidokilia and hiking to the magnificent Polylimni Waterfalls. Renting a reliable car, such as those offered by AutodriveRentals, is the “key” to catching up on everything easily and safely.
Day 1 – Exploring Kalamata City
The best way to acclimatize is to dedicate the first day to the city itself, which is vibrant and full of contrasts.
- Morning in the Old Town: Start your day by walking through the cobblestone streets below the Castle of Kalamata. There you will find traditional cafes, bakeries and the impressive Metropolitan Church of Ypapanti. The Castle, built in the 13th century, offers panoramic views of the entire Messinian Gulf.
- Noon in the Central Square (Vasileos Georgiou): Walk down to the center, have your coffee and do your shopping on the pedestrian street of Aristomenous. If you happen to be there on a Wednesday or Saturday, the Central Market of Kalamata (Laiki) is a must for local products.
- Afternoon by the Wave: Head to the famous Navarinou Street. Stroll along the huge pedestrian/bike path with palm trees. Enjoy your dinner of fresh fish and local meze at one of the many beach restaurants as the sun sets.
Day 2 – Diving at Nearby Beaches
On the second day, you don’t have to go far to find crystal clear waters. With your rental car from Autodrive, the best beaches are just 10-15 minutes away from the center.
- Verga & Almyros: As you leave the city heading east, the areas of Verga and Almyros are full of Beach Bars with high-quality services and pebbles.
- Mikri Mantineia & Santova: Continue a little further down, where the waters become deeper and clearer, with impressive spots (especially in Santova) that gather the youth until late in the afternoon, with DJ sets and cocktails by the sea.
Day 3 – Road Trip to Messinian Mani
This is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful routes (Roadtrips) you can take in Greece.
- Kardamyli (45 minutes from Kalamata): A stone, mansion-like village hidden at the foot of Mount Taygetos. Stop for a morning coffee, walk to Old Kardamyli and swim at Ritsa or Foneas. (See our Stoupa/Kardamyli Guide).
- Stoupa & Agios Nikolaos: A few kilometers later, you will come across Stoupa, with the famous sandy beaches of “Kalogria” (made famous by Kazantzakis) and “Stoupa”. In the afternoon, end up at the picturesque port of Agios Nikolaos for fresh fish next to the fishing boats.
Day 4 – History & Exotic Beaches (Pylos & Voidokilia)
Change direction on the fourth day and head West, towards the shores of the Ionian Sea.
- Voidokilia & Gialova: Start early to catch the quiet of Messinia’s most famous beach, the round Voidokilia. After swimming, walk along the coastal promenade of Gialova next to the lagoon for excellent food (See our Guide to Costa Navarino/Pylos).
- Nestor’s Castle & Pylos: In the afternoon, discover the picturesque, amphitheatrical Pylos with the huge Niokastro and the shady square with plane trees. (If you have time, “jump” a little further south to the impressive sea Castle of Methoni).
Day 5 – Discovering Polylimnio
For the last day, leave the beaches and enjoy the “jungle” of Messinia.
About 50 minutes from Kalamata, you will find the Polylimnio waterfalls. A lush green gorge forms a series of natural lakes (about 15) with icy, blue-green waters, ideal for a refreshing dip in August. The hike is passable, but requires sneakers.
Organization: How to get around on your schedule?
As you would have noticed, while the center of Kalamata is walkable, all the “gems” of the area require a 30 to 80-minute drive on the provincial network. Local buses (KTEL) operate, but frequencies are limited and do not serve distant isolated beaches such as Voidokilia or Polylimnio. Daily taxi rides are prohibitively expensive.
For this reason, renting a reliable car is not a luxury, but a necessity. Through Autodrive Rentals, you can choose an automatic vehicle or a comfortable SUV and start directly from Kalamata Airport without guarantees, with 100% full comprehensive insurance and unlimited mileage!
